FAQ

Answer
Samples are retrieved from archaelogical digs (e.g. a tooth from human remains) and the DNA is scanned in a complex process aligning the data with the human genome. Samples which are of high quality can then be processed as Ancient DNA samples.
Answer
Raw samples are available to the public on online academic databases in raw format. Many ancient samples are of poor quality, but using advanced techniques it is possible to pull valuable information which can be used for comparisons.
Answer
By combining the latest archaeogenetic techniques with powerful admixture algorithms and cloud computing, MyTrueAncestry can accurately compare anyone with a wide variety of Ancient DNA samples. Via data triangulation and clustering, one can be categorized and compared with ancestors separated by thousands of years.
Answer
Unlike other companies which try to cater to target audiences pre-conceptions about their identity, MyTrueAncestry focuses in accurately determing one's closest match based on tens of thousands of data samples.
Answer
The Populations tab lets you select any ethnicity and automatically determine the closest matches to other modern and ancient groups. Not only can one compare autosomal DNA, but also patrilineal and maternal lines. Note: this feautre is not related to your own DNA, but is based on reference signatures of global populations. It is our hope this allows people to discover more about populations as a whole.
Answer
If you have already tested your Y-DNA or mtDNA, you can determine if you share any common male or female ancestors with nobility and some other famous people.
Answer
Autosomal DNA is a term used in genetic genealogy to describe DNA which is inherited from the autosomal chromosomes. An autosome is any of the numbered chromosomes, as opposed to the sex chromosomes. Humans have 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes (the X chromosome and the Y chromosome)
Answer
A Y chromosome DNA test (Y-DNA test) is a genealogical DNA test which is used to explore a man's patrilineal or direct father's-line ancestry. The Y chromosome, like the patrilineal surname, passes down virtually unchanged from father to son.
Answer
Our mitochondrial DNA accounts for a small portion of our total DNA. It contains just 37 of the 20,000 to 25,000 protein-coding genes in our body. But it is notably distinct from DNA in the nucleus. Unlike nuclear DNA, which comes from both parents, mitochondrial DNA comes only from the mother.
Answer
The Haplogroup Analytics feature aggregates the known haplogroups of all your ancient matching samples. This provides an estimation of your ancient family tree male and female lines - in this case all matching males will offer a Y-DNA haplogroup. The collective results are displayed and very often display one's own known haplogroups.
Answer
Blue dots link to a clearly defined set of ancient peoples. Red dots refer to ancient samples where identity is difficult to determine based on archaelogical evidence.
Faded dots mean distant connection, brighter dots mean very close DNA distance to you
Answer
We collect and process samples from various public sources including for example the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) where raw SRA files are available.
Answer
Deep Dive results represent proven chromosome matches between you and the ancient person. Ancient samples are ancient people who share your admixture signature. Deep Dive results are more conlusive but both are useful and often times match.
Answer
A sample match means you share genetic markers with the sample and indicates you share similiar ancestry (the smaller the genetic distance, the closer you are). A deep dive match means you share DNA segments with the sample providing direct evidence of common ancestry with the individual.
Answer
Not everybody is lucky enough to match with an existing ancient sample in our platform. We will add more samples over time and you should try back again later!
Answer
Deep Dive comparisons are calculated using consecutive SNP (dna marker) lengths where the alleles match between your kit and the sample. cM values are a by-product of that based on the chromosome length and various factors related to age and sample quality. We provide values very similiar to Gedmatch for example when you do a direct comparison with any ancient sample. Our slider bars enable you to adjust the minimum SNP length and cM value in real time to the setting you feel is best for the sample. Also note the default values are very liberal (SNP length 60 and 1.5 cM) in order to accommodate lower quality / more ancient samples.
Answer
Our system deletes all uploaded DNA files as soon as processing completes. This means any future features requiring your raw sample will need the same.
Answer
Absolutely, your results and kits will stay as long as you wish. Any new kits you add will get the full benefits of your upgraded account. And of course any new features available for your access level will be available free of charge.
Answer
It could be there are no ancient samples close to your DNA. We will be adding samples and populations from South America, Asia and Africa in the coming weeks.
Answer
Check that your file is not multiple zipped (e.g. dna file inside a gzip inside a zip).
Build36 files are not supported (e.g. older ones). Please use a build37 file.
Answer
Try the 'Basic Upload' function below the normal upload button

We are a team of Technologists, DNA Experts and Data Security Specialists with a passion for ancient ancestry and genetics. Our main office is in Switzerland and our corporate website is here
Answer
Why do we use Google today and not Altavista? Innovation. MyTrueAncestry represents the latest algorithms to solve these problems with over 250 ethnicities. Other 'big companies' typically have about 20 categories. e.g. if you are German it will say you are half English and half Finnish.
Answer
By design you never have to enter your personal information anywhere. You can even create a fake email address and we will activate you account for you. Your uploaded data is deleted immediately after processing finishes.
Answer
Yes as described in the Privacy policy. In accordance with GDPR, all data is tracked carefully from user upload until it is destroyed. Users may elect at any point to destroy their kits or request their login account be removed.
Answer
We use Stripe (https://stripe.com) for managing the entire payment process, including sending you a receipt afterwards. Stripe is the new standard in online payments for online businesses.
Answer
Yes, just email us at info@mytrueancestry.com with the upgrade you want and we will send you an invoice. In the future this will be built-in and automated.
Answer
You only pay the difference in cost between levels - e.g. you receive full credit for the base price of any access level you currently have.
Answer
Logout and when the sign in pop-up appears there is an option to change your e-mail address.
Answer
We process DNA files from virtually every DNA testing service but do not ship testing kits. You can choose from any provider you like and once you receive your results simply upload the autosomal build 37 data file to us and your results are ready in approximately 15 minutes.
Answer
Simple, just click on the account icon and there is a button at the bottom to enable you to close your account and all the associated result data is removed. If you decide to create an account in the future again, please contact us and we can upgrade your new account to the previous level.
Answer
If you delete your account you are automatically unsubscribed. Otherwise if you want to keep your account but just get off the mailing list, just reply unsubscribe to any email or contact us directly by email or Facebook.
